Revitalization in Biloxi: The Retreat Community Takes Shape

BILOXI, Miss. – After nearly two decades of planning and anticipation, Biloxi is witnessing the long-awaited development of a new community tailored specifically for seniors. The project, aptly named The Retreat, is finally moving forward, with ten houses currently under construction behind the former E-Fitness building on Tribe Drive. This initiative promises to bring a vibrant new living option for residents aged 55 and older, with a total of 50 homes planned for the site.

A Vision Realized

The journey to The Retreat began back in 2006 when the city of Biloxi approved a comprehensive development plan that envisioned a blend of residential homes, apartments, and commercial spaces. The first phase of this ambitious project was the establishment of the E-Fitness gym, which served as a community hub for several years. However, as time passed, the project stalled, and the property remained dormant after the gym closed in 2016.

In 2022, a new chapter began when Lodging & Leisure Investments, LLC acquired the land. The company has since repurposed the old gym as office space and has now taken significant steps to bring the residential aspect of the development to life by securing permits for the construction of the first homes.

A Unique Community for Seniors

Jerry Creel, Biloxi’s Community Development Director, expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting its unique focus on senior living. “This is the first community that I’m aware of that was specifically built in individual houses for seniors,” he stated. Creel believes that the combination of well-designed homes and the amenities planned for The Retreat will attract many prospective buyers eager to enjoy a vibrant lifestyle in a supportive community.

The Retreat is designed to cater to the needs and preferences of older adults, providing a safe and engaging environment where they can thrive. The development is strategically located near key community facilities, including Biloxi High School and the A.J. Holloway Sports Complex, making it an ideal spot for seniors who wish to remain connected to family activities and local events.

A Commitment to Community

Tessy Lambert, the chief marketing officer for Lodging & Leisure Investments, shared her excitement about revitalizing this long-quiet part of Biloxi. “It’s truly an honor to bring new life to it with The Retreat,” she remarked. Lambert emphasized the community’s central location, which offers residents easy access to various amenities and services, enhancing their quality of life.

While the initial focus is on the residential aspect, plans for an apartment complex and commercial retail spaces have yet to be submitted to the city. Developers have not provided a timeline for these additional components, but the community is poised for growth and development in the coming years.

Looking Ahead

As construction progresses, the anticipation surrounding The Retreat continues to build. The project represents not only a significant investment in Biloxi’s future but also a commitment to enhancing the lives of its senior residents. With the right developers at the helm, as Creel noted, the community is expected to bring renewed energy and vibrancy to the area.

In conclusion, The Retreat stands as a beacon of hope for those seeking a supportive and engaging community in their later years. As Biloxi embraces this new development, it reinforces the city’s dedication to creating spaces that foster connection, well-being, and a sense of belonging for all its residents. The Retreat is not just a housing project; it’s a step towards a brighter, more inclusive future for the senior population of Biloxi.
