Natalie Nakase: Pioneering Leadership in the WNBA with the Golden State Valkyries

Natalie Nakase is no stranger to winning. With a remarkable three-season tenure as an assistant coach for the Las Vegas Aces, she played a pivotal role alongside head coach Becky Hammon in leading the team to back-to-back WNBA championships. Now, Nakase is embarking on a new chapter in her career as the head coach of the Golden State Valkyries, the newest franchise in the WNBA, set to tip off in May 2025. Her journey is not just about basketball; it’s about breaking barriers and inspiring future generations.

Making History in the WNBA

The addition of the Golden State Valkyries marks a significant milestone in the WNBA, as it is the first new franchise to be added since 2008. Nakase’s appointment as head coach is historic in another way: she is the first Asian-American to hold this title in the league. Reflecting on her journey, Nakase expressed her disbelief at the impact she can have simply by being present in this space. "It feels surreal," she told PopSugar. "I guess… because when I was young, I just played basketball because I loved it."

Her love for the game began in her childhood, where she would practice daily with her father. This dedication led her to play college basketball at UCLA and later in the National Women’s Basketball League. Over the years, Nakase has amassed a wealth of coaching experience, including stints with various international teams and the NBA’s LA Clippers and their G League affiliate, Agua Caliente.

The Impact of Representation

Nakase’s journey has illuminated the importance of representation in sports. While coaching a men’s team in Japan, she experienced firsthand the profound impact her presence had on young women in the community. "There would be so many women after my games… just to say hi or thank you," she recalled. One particular encounter left a lasting impression on her: an older woman who attended every game and expressed her gratitude with tears, calling Nakase her hero. This moment underscored the significance of her role and the inspiration she provides to others.

As she steps into her new role with the Valkyries, Nakase is acutely aware of the responsibility that comes with her position. "Now moving forward, I’m like, ‘Okay, Nat this is the responsibility that you have,’" she said. "I’m going to obviously do the best I can — and I think doing the best I can means winning championships."

A Winning Culture and State-of-the-Art Facilities

The Valkyries are backed by owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber, who also own the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, a team with a storied history of success. Nakase is excited about the winning culture that surrounds her new team. "I love the fact that we’re around a lot of winners, people who have won championships. I mean to me, then it’s like the blueprint is here, the fan base is here," she noted.

In addition to a supportive ownership group, the Valkyries will benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, including a dedicated practice space in Oakland and a locker room at the Chase Center, home of the Warriors. This level of investment is unprecedented in the WNBA, where many teams share facilities or face logistical challenges. "We have 24/7 access to 17 baskets… which is a huge advantage for our team," Nakase explained, emphasizing the importance of a conducive environment for player development.

Building a Competitive Team

While Nakase is optimistic about the Valkyries’ potential, she understands that championships are not handed out. "These players are not going to just walk in with championship qualities by all means," she stated. Her approach will involve rigorous preparation and a focus on developing a competitive mindset among her players. She seeks individuals who embody selflessness, hard work, and a love for winning. "We’re not going to be, right away, the New York Liberty, Las Vegas Aces, Minnesota Lynx. We’re not there yet," she acknowledged.

Her goal is to foster growth in each player, recognizing that skill development is only part of the equation. The environment in which players train is equally crucial. Nakase aims to create a supportive atmosphere reminiscent of her time with the Aces, where players feel comfortable being their authentic selves. "Becky [Hammon] has one of the biggest hearts I’ve ever been around for a coach," Nakase said. "I think that’s really what I’m going to take [from her and the Aces]. I’m going to lead with my heart at the Valkyries."

Conclusion

As Natalie Nakase prepares to lead the Golden State Valkyries into their inaugural season, she embodies the spirit of resilience and determination. Her journey from a young girl playing basketball with her father to becoming a trailblazing head coach in the WNBA is a testament to her passion for the game and her commitment to making a difference. With a focus on winning, player development, and representation, Nakase is poised to leave an indelible mark on the league and inspire the next generation of athletes. The Valkyries are not just a new team; they represent a new era in women’s basketball, one that Nakase is excited to lead.
