Senator Bill Cassidy Tours Bayou Bend Health and Wellness Center: A Commitment to Rural Healthcare

LAFAYETTE, LA – In a significant display of support for rural healthcare, U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), visited the Bayou Bend Health and Wellness Center today. Established in 1953, this vital institution has been a cornerstone of health services in St. Mary Parish, providing a wide array of medical services comparable to those found in larger urban hospitals.

The Importance of Quality Healthcare

During his tour, Senator Cassidy emphasized the critical role that quality healthcare plays in community development. “As a doctor, I know that good health care is important for the individual, the family, and the community,” he stated. “Families will move to a community based upon the quality of their health care. Bayou Bend is meeting those needs and then some.” His remarks underscore the essential connection between healthcare availability and community growth, particularly in rural areas where access to medical services can be limited.

Legislative Efforts to Combat Health Issues

Senator Cassidy is not just a visitor; he is an active advocate for improving healthcare access and addressing pressing health issues. Last July, he reintroduced the bipartisan Treat and Reduce Obesity Act, aimed at expanding Medicare coverage for chronic weight management medications and specialists. This legislation reflects a growing recognition of obesity as a significant public health challenge, particularly in rural communities.

In addition to obesity, Cassidy has introduced several other initiatives to bolster rural healthcare. These include the Protecting Access to Ground Ambulance Medical Services Act, which aims to support ambulance services in rural areas, and the PEERS in Medicare Act, designed to promote peer counseling for senior citizens. Furthermore, the CONNECT for Health Act seeks to enhance telehealth services through Medicare, a crucial step in ensuring that rural residents can access healthcare without the barriers of distance.

Bayou Bend’s Comprehensive Services

Bayou Bend Health and Wellness Center offers a wide range of medical services, including respiratory therapy, radiology, pain management, rehabilitation, maternity care, and surgical services. The facility also boasts a Wellness Center equipped with a fitness center, indoor walking track, group exercise studios, and spaces for wellness testing and therapy. During his visit, Senator Cassidy toured both the hospital and the wellness center, guided by Ms. Stephanie Guidry, the CEO of Bayou Bend.

Ms. Guidry expressed gratitude for Cassidy’s visit, highlighting the center’s mission to transition from merely treating illness to fostering overall wellness in the community. “We had wonderful discussions about Bayou Bend’s growth and strategy,” she said. “In just our first year open, we’ve had over 100,000 check-ins to the facility, and members have recorded almost 10 million calories burned! Our team has done a tremendous job of providing a place that is ‘more than just a gym.’”

Engaging with Local Leaders

Following his tour of Bayou Bend, Senator Cassidy met with local leaders in Morgan City, including the mayors of Morgan City and Franklin, as well as the Executive Director of the Morgan City Harbor and Terminal District. The discussions focused on improving St. Mary Parish’s infrastructure, a topic of great importance given the region’s economic development needs.

Cassidy’s efforts through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) have already yielded significant funding for the parish. In 2022, nearly $20 million was allocated to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for construction and repairs along the Atchafalaya Basin. Additionally, Cassidy secured $10 million to expand the Port of Morgan City’s dock, along with $2.3 million for upgrading the emergency operations center at the port in the Fiscal Year 2024 budget.

A Collaborative Approach to Economic Growth

Mr. Evan Boudreaux, Director of Economic Development, Policy, and Government Affairs for St. Mary Parish, emphasized the importance of collaboration in fostering economic growth. “A critical factor in cultivating long-lasting economic growth in any community is having all of your partners come to the table to move the needle on addressing local challenges,” he noted. Boudreaux praised Cassidy as a vital ally for St. Mary Parish, crediting his leadership in securing funding that addresses the community’s most pressing needs.

Conclusion

Senator Bill Cassidy’s visit to the Bayou Bend Health and Wellness Center is a testament to his commitment to improving healthcare access and infrastructure in rural Louisiana. His legislative initiatives and active engagement with local leaders reflect a comprehensive approach to fostering healthier communities and promoting economic growth. As Bayou Bend continues to serve as a beacon of health and wellness in St. Mary Parish, the collaborative efforts between local institutions and federal representatives like Cassidy are essential for ensuring a brighter, healthier future for all residents.
