Celebrating Mental Health: Highlights from Wellness University 2024

On October 10th, 2024, the Teen Care Network (TCN) hosted a vibrant and impactful event known as Wellness University (Well-U) at Old Dominion University’s Webb Center. This gathering coincided with World Mental Health Day, bringing together students, community members, and mental health advocates to foster awareness and promote mental well-being. With the support of First Star Academy ODU, MTV Entertainment Studios, and Active Minds, the event was a resounding success, filled with music, resources, and advocacy.

A Day of Celebration and Awareness

The atmosphere at Well-U 2024 was electric, thanks in large part to the live music provided by DJ ILLMATIC. His energetic set captivated attendees, creating a lively backdrop for the day’s activities. The event was designed not only to entertain but also to educate and empower participants regarding mental health issues. Attendees were encouraged to engage with various wellness resources, including the A.S.K. (Acknowledge, Support, and Know) mental health initiative, which offers practical tools for navigating mental health challenges.

Engaging Activities and Resources

Well-U 2024 featured a variety of engaging activities aimed at promoting mental health awareness. Attendees had the opportunity to capture memorable moments through photo booths, and they received free T-shirts and gifts as tokens of appreciation for their participation. The event also provided valuable information on mental health services, ensuring that attendees left with resources to support their well-being.

A significant highlight of the event was the voter registration services available to attendees. With the deadline for voter registration in Virginia approaching on October 15th, local volunteers were on hand to assist participants in checking their registration statuses and completing the registration process. This initiative underscored the importance of civic engagement alongside mental health advocacy.

Voices of the Community

Dorian Hollingsworth Jr., Executive Director of Teen Care Network, expressed his satisfaction with the event’s turnout and the enthusiasm displayed by attendees. “We are incredibly pleased with the turnout and the enthusiasm of everyone who attended,” he stated. “This event not only celebrated World Mental Health Day but also offered meaningful resources for young people to prioritize their mental well-being and get involved in community action, including voter registration.”

The collaborative efforts of TCN, First Star Academy ODU, MTV Entertainment Studios, and Active Minds amplified the message that mental health matters for everyone. Attendees engaged in meaningful conversations about mental health awareness and advocacy, all within a fun and supportive environment.

Breaking Stigmas and Building Community

Wellness University 2024 was part of Teen Care Network’s ongoing mission to break the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly in Black communities and other communities of color. By offering programs and resources that promote mental wellness, TCN aims to create a culture where mental health is openly discussed and prioritized.

“We’re thankful for the incredible partnerships that made this day a success,” Hollingsworth Jr. added. “Together, we are creating spaces for young people to engage with mental health resources in a way that is both impactful and fun.” Special recognition was given to Alexia Hargrove, Director of First Star Academy ODU, for her contributions to the event.

Capturing the Moment

The event was beautifully documented by photographer Te’Rance Spurlock Jr. of VelliVisuals Studios, who captured the excitement and joy of attendees as they participated in various wellness activities. The highlights of the day can be viewed in an event recap video available on TCN’s YouTube channel, showcasing the vibrant atmosphere and the community spirit that defined Well-U 2024.
