BB’s Home Away from Home: A Sanctuary of Joy and Connection for Seniors in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — Nestled in the heart of Indianapolis, BB’s Home Away from Home stands as a beacon of hope and vitality for seniors seeking companionship, support, and a sense of belonging. This vibrant center has become a sanctuary where good energy flows freely, transforming the lives of its participants in profound ways.

A Transformative Experience

Roberta Smith, a regular attendee, describes her experience at BB’s as life-changing. “They keep us moving and shaking. They gave us new energy about ourselves,” she shares, highlighting the center’s impact on both physical and mental well-being. For many seniors, the challenges of aging can lead to feelings of isolation and sadness. However, BB’s offers a remedy that extends beyond mere physical activity; it fosters a nurturing environment that uplifts spirits and encourages social interaction.

Holistic Approach to Wellness

At BB’s, guests are treated to a variety of enriching activities designed to promote both mental and physical health. Participants enjoy home-cooked meals that nourish the body, engage in memory and fitness games that stimulate the mind, and partake in weekly outings that provide fresh experiences and socialization opportunities. Additionally, the center offers transportation services to ensure that seniors can easily access the facility and attend medical appointments, further alleviating the burdens of daily life.

Bonnie Hartley, another participant, echoes the sentiments of her peers, stating, “It’s really helped with isolation because I’m not talking to the walls at home.” She emphasizes the importance of the center’s activities, which include morning devotionals and exercise sessions, in enhancing her overall well-being. “It’s made me feel a lot better in my body because we exercise, we have devotion in the morning, and it’s opened my mental up,” she adds.

A Vision Born from Love

The heart and soul of BB’s Home Away from Home can be traced back to its executive director, Brittany Owens. Following the loss of her grandparents, who played a pivotal role in her upbringing, Owens felt a profound need to create a space that honored their legacy while addressing the pressing need for affordable senior services in the community. “My grandparents raised me. I had that love and support from them growing up, so my goal with this center is to bridge the gap between the youth and elderly because it’s needed,” she explains.

Owens’ vision is not just about providing services; it’s about cultivating a family-like atmosphere where seniors can thrive, connect, and support one another.

Community Support and Engagement

BB’s Home Away from Home operates as a non-profit organization, relying heavily on donations and community support to sustain its programs. While Medicaid waivers are accepted, the center also encourages community members to sponsor seniors who may not have sufficient insurance coverage. Nina Powell, the Director of Development and Community Engagement, emphasizes the importance of bridging the gap for those in need. “We know some seniors have different insurance plans, but some may not have enough coverage or any coverage to get them in the door, so we want to make sure that we bridge that gap,” she states.

The sense of community at BB’s is palpable, with attendees often referring to each other as family. They extend an open invitation to others who may be feeling lonely or depressed, encouraging them to join the vibrant community. “Here we have the inspiration to live each and every day. If you are feeling lonely or discouraged, or if you have a mother or father feeling that way, bring them here. They will become family,” Smith assures.

Upcoming Events and Community Involvement

To further strengthen community ties, BB’s Home Away from Home will host a Grandparents and Family Celebration on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event promises to be a joyous occasion, featuring the participation of Indianapolis firefighters who will donate bicycle helmets to be given away. Such events not only foster community spirit but also provide opportunities for families to connect and celebrate together.

Conclusion

BB’s Home Away from Home is more than just a center for seniors; it is a vibrant community that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit. With its holistic approach to wellness, compassionate leadership, and unwavering community support, BB’s is truly a home away from home for those seeking connection and joy in their golden years. Whether you are a senior in need of companionship or a community member looking to make a difference, BB’s welcomes you with open arms.
