Usher: Building a Legacy Through Music and Family

ATLANTA — Usher Raymond IV, the R&B icon, is not just a performer; he is a legacy builder. At 45 years old, Usher continues to captivate audiences with his soulful vocals, expertly choreographed dance moves, and undeniable charisma. As he embarks on his highly anticipated Usher: Past Present Future tour, he reflects on his journey and the importance of celebrating his musical legacy.

A Celebration of Legacy

In a recent conversation with USA TODAY, Usher emphasized the significance of his upcoming tour. "I’m promoting a legacy: Past, present, and future," he stated. "I’ve been doing this long enough to celebrate the legacy of my music from the beginning of my career up until an incredible moment that I’m having as a result of what I’ve been doing in Las Vegas and also the Super Bowl and other live performances." This tour is not just a series of concerts; it is a tribute to his three-decade-long career and an opportunity to connect with fans old and new.

Preparing for the Stage

Usher’s preparation for his concerts is a meticulous process that combines physical fitness, diet, and family time. His workout routine is tailored to ensure he remains in peak condition for the demanding choreography that his performances require. "I kind of have a workout routine that I do before I go on stage, which is band work," he explains. "I work with medicine balls, light weights, and balance exercises to keep my body ready for the stage." He humorously adds, "Considering the physical demands of my concert choreography, that’s enough of a workout. You sweat for two hours straight."

Diet and Fasting: A Personal Connection

Usher’s diet is another crucial aspect of his preparation. During an interview, he casually munched on "fancy" chicken soup while discussing his eating habits. "On a good day, I’m not supposed to be eating carbs. On a bad day, I eat carbs," he quips. Notably, Usher observes a weekly fast on Wednesdays, a practice inspired by his grandmother. "It started with my grandmother. My grandmother had a prayer group, and everybody would fast on Wednesdays," he shares. This tradition not only connects him to his roots but also serves as a personal health commitment.

The Art of Rehearsal

Usher’s dedication to his craft is evident in the countless hours he spends rehearsing for his performances. The Past Present Future tour features high-octane choreography and innovative use of technology, including AI visuals that enhance the live experience. "From the technical side, I feel like that is the future part of it," he explains. "If I can find new ways to introduce people to a live experience, where I can take them back in history, hopefully fans will be fascinated by the way that I’ve chosen to use technology."

A Journey Through Music

Reflecting on his early experiences as a concert-goer, Usher recalls attending an Ice-T concert in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which left a lasting impression on him. "Being able to see him talk to us in the gymnasium, it really gave me a spark," he remembers. This moment of inspiration fueled his desire to become an entertainer, showcasing the profound impact that live performances can have on aspiring artists.

Balancing Family Life on Tour

As a father of four, Usher is committed to maintaining a strong connection with his children while on tour. He has two older sons, Usher "Cinco" Raymond V and Naviyd, from his previous marriage, and two younger children, Sovereign and Sire, with his wife, Jenn Raymond. Usher actively seeks advice from his older kids regarding his career and social media presence, stating, "I always run things by them, just to make certain that, ‘Hey, is this cool?’"

For his younger children, he emphasizes the importance of imagination and outdoor activities. "We read a lot of books together, but I’m challenging them to utilize their imagination," he says. "Instead of spending time in front of the screen, we spend time in the yard. We stay outside, we stay mobile, we stay active."

Inspiration from K-Pop and Beyond

Usher’s Past Present Future tour is also influenced by contemporary artists, particularly those in the K-pop genre. "It gave me some new ideas," he admits. "It just made me think outside the box to see how artists that come from the K-pop world choose to do things." He acknowledges that while K-pop has brought a new level of performance artistry, the roots of dynamic live shows can be traced back to the late ’80s and ’90s, where immersive performances were the norm.

Conclusion

As Usher prepares to take the stage for his Past Present Future tour, he embodies the spirit of a true artist dedicated to his craft and his family. His commitment to building a legacy through music, fitness, and parenting showcases the multifaceted nature of his life. With each performance, Usher not only entertains but also inspires, reminding us all of the power of music and the importance of connection—both on and off the stage.
